about the film

After working as a filmmaker for ten years, I made the decision to focus the lens on my own experience with having primary-progressive MS. “When I Walk” is about my journey as a 30-year-old film director living with a complex disease amidst complex circumstances. My personal narrative is the anchor point in a film that weaves together interviews, incidents in the life of a young filmmaker, and current information about multiple sclerosis.

When I Walk is a point-of-view feature-length documentary about how my world changed after I was diagnosed with MS in 2005. The film paints a picture of what it is like to live with MS - the ins and outs of the symptoms and the day-to-day challenges. As well, there are interviews with other people who have MS and those who support them.

The documentary delves deep into the nature of this complex neurological disorder, and explores available support systems for those with MS, as well as traditional medical and alternative treatments. As the story unfolds, I come to better understand the disease and develop strategies for the future. The film provides information and inspiration to those affected by MS and their supporters, and gives a wider audience a unique insight into what happens when a person faces the challenge of living with a disabling chronic illness—while pursuing an artistic career and a busy, wonderful, full life.
